T20 World Cup: The All-around West Indies defeated Zimbabwe by a margin of 31 runs in a group match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 to stay alive for the Super 12
After getting a shocking defeat by Scotland in their opening match on Monday, the Windies hardly had any margin for error to make. It was a must-win game for the Skipper Nicholas Puran to stay in the hunt for the Super 12 stage.
After winning the toss the West Indies decided to bat first at the Bellerive Oval. They put up a total of 153 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Both the openers gave a cracking start where Johnson Charles made 45 of just 36 balls and he was backed by the middle order batsman Rovman Powell (21-ball 28) and the tail-ender Akeal Hosein who made (18- ball 23). Charles came into the squad as a replacement for Brandon King, who is unwell. He was the top scorer for the West Indies.
However, the total was proved enough for the Windies as they packed off the whole Zimbabwe team for just 122 runs in 18.2 overs and 10 balls remaining.
While starting the run chase Zimbabwe got off to a flyer start but could not carry on to it. Suddenly, after the end of the power play, they started losing their wickets at regular intervals.
The West Indies star pacer Alzarri Joseph picked 4 wickets for 16 runs in his full spell of 4 overs. It seems to be one of his best career figures which have helped the Windies win their do-or-die match. Alzarri Joseph was accompanied by the experienced all-rounder Jason Holder who took 3 important wickets in his quota of 3.2 overs along with Obed McCoy who took 1/19 in his 3 overs. Joseph was named the Man of the Match (MOM) for his outstanding performance with the ball picking four wickets haul.
Luke Jongwe was the top scorer for Zimbabwe scoring 29(22) followed by Wesley Madhevere 27(19) and Ryan Burl 17(19).
Sikandar Raza was the most successful bowler for Zimbabwe taking 3 wickets and giving 19 cheap runs in his 4 overs.
